Congratulations dear woman on the beautiful experience of marriage.

This article will guide you on the step-by-step guide that you need to change your maiden name to your husband’s name.

I advise that you change your name as soon as you get married especially for applications and registrations you will be turning in. It also helps you to adapt to your new name quickly.

I am sharing with you based on my research and personal experience, I don’t work with NIMC, CUSTOMS or the institution you need to change your name on.

There are several Identity documents that you may want to change your name on, but there are two basic requirements you need to start with before you can go ahead to effect the change on your Identity documents like your NIN, International passport, Driver’s License, etc.

THE TWO BASIC REQUIREMENTS REQUIRED FOR YOUR CHANGE OF NAME

  1. Newspaper Publication

2. Court Affidavit

Newspaper Publication

This is the first step to changing your name, you have to inform the general public via a Newspaper that you have changed your name.

In Nigeria, publishing a notice of the name change in a newspaper is a legal requirement. It serves as a public announcement of the intention to change your name and provides an opportunity for any objections or challenges to be raised by interested parties.

The newspaper publication serves as tangible evidence of your intent to change your name. It provides a documented record of the name change process, which can be referenced in legal proceedings or when updating official documents and records.

Court Affidavit

This is the second foundational step to your change of name process. In Nigeria, obtaining an affidavit is a necessary step in legally changing your name.

The affidavit serves as a sworn statement made under oath before a judicial authority, such as a magistrate or notary public, affirming your intention to change your name.

The affidavit provides clear and formal evidence of your intent to change your name. By swearing an affidavit, you attest to the authenticity of your desire to adopt a new name, which adds a level of formality and seriousness to the name change process.

The affidavit serves as a crucial piece of documentation in the name change process. It provides a legal record of your decision to change your name.

These two requirements are foundational for you to initiate any process of changing your name.

The GOOD NEWS is that I can help you get these two requirements done without leaving your house and ready within 1 week at the most.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Upon getting the Newspaper publication and court affidavit done, you can now proceed to update your:

  • NIN
  • BVN
  • Bank Name
  • Driver’s Licence
  • International Passport

NIN update — You need your Newspaper publication, court affidavit and marriage certificate to get this done. It requires you to go to an NIN enrolment centre, preferably very early so you can get it sorted once and for all. They give preference to pregnant women and nursing mothers. Click on this link for more details https://nimc.gov.ng/modifications-adults/

BVN Update — You have to go to the bank where you registered your BVN and present your marriage certificate and NIN e-copy or slip. If you are unable to go back to where you registered your BVN, walk into any of the branches of the bank and ask them what you need to do.

BANK NAME — You will assume that once you update your BVN, your bank name will change automatically, sadly that is not the case, it was surprising to me when I did mine as well. You have to go to all your banks one after the other to update your name once it has been updated on your BVN. You can take it a step at a time, especially when you have a lot of bank accounts.

DRIVER’S LICENCE — You can wait till your current licence expires and then update it upon renewal, your updated NIN slip will be required as well as the expired Driver’s licence.

INTERNATIONAL PASSPORT — To update your international passport, I was able to glean what you need from the Nigerian Immigration Service website. https://immigration.gov.ng/#passport-section

According to them the requirements for a person who wants to change their name on their international passport as a result of marriage are:

  • Application Letter.
  • Copy of Marriage Certificate or Declaration of Marriage.
  • Sworn Affidavit from a Magistrate or High Court of Change of Name deposed by Applicant.
  • Copy of Newspaper Publication of Change of Name (21 days after publication).
  • Statutory evidence of change of name (if resident outside Nigeria in lieu of iii and iv).
  • Passport Booklet and Copy of Data Page of Passport.
  • Acknowledgement Slip & Evidence of Payment.

According to them, the steps you need to take are shown below:

  • From the application portal dashboard, click on “Apply for Correction of Data” https://passport.immigration.gov.ng/
  • Verify your NIN (enter your date of birth for second-level checks)
  • Provide your current passport details and review data comparison against your NIN data
  • Select your processing centre and booklet size (32 pages or 64 pages)
  • Upload your ICAO compliant picture
  • Review your personal details (these are your NIMC records). Ensure you provide a valid email address for further communication
  • Provide your contact address and next of kin information
  • Upload supporting documents (these are based on your application type)
  • Review and submit your application. Then proceed to make payment and book an appointment for biometric enrolment

These steps only apply to you if you are changing your name on your passport, but if you have never had an international passport before you changed your name then this is not for you.

Your change of name process can be seamless if you let me help you.
